PUNE, March 24: In a stop-gap arrangement forced upon the University of Pune due to the ongoing controversy concerning reservations for the post, pro-vice-chancellor Dr B D Chaure will take charge as acting vice-chancellor of the University of Pune on Tuesday. Maharashtra Governor and Chancellor Dr P C Alexander will decide on the new V-C within a month.
Highly placed sources in the Chancellor’s office told The Indian Express that orders had been issued regarding Chaure’s appointment. Interestingly, this is the first time that the Chancellor has had to resort to an interim arrangement in the UoP even as the outgoing V-C Dr Vasant Gowariker’s term ends tomorrow. The only other instance had arisen due to the mid-term resignation of the then V-C.
“The process did take time, but it is not highly unusual for appointing any suitable candidate to officiate as the V-C,” sources said. The UoP received a faxed copy of the Chancellor’s order appointing Chaure to officiate as V-C. It could not beascertained whether the “reservation issue” had delayed the new V-C’s appointment. The term of the office of the PVC is co-terminus with that of the Vice-Chancellor. However, according to Section 12 of the Maharashtra Universities’ Act, ’94, the Chancellor can appoint a suitable person to act as V-C for a term not exceeding six months, if the former does not approve any of the persons recommended by the selection committee.
Senior research scientist Pramod Kale, director of National Accreditation and Assessment Council Arun Nigavekar and director of Bioinformatics Centre A S Kolaskar had been shortlisted by the committee. Chaure was the former principal of HPT Arts and RYK Science college, Nashik before he was appointed PVC in July ’95. A Ph D in physics, he was also the registrar of the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University.
