Ready, get set, yahoo!!
Shopping for school books and bags and stationery and shoes can be fun. Don’t believe it? Then a trip to the week-long exhibition cum sale that was inaugurated on June 1 at the New English School, Tilak Road is a must. For Yahoo ’98 shows you just how you can add a dash of pleasure to that oh-so painful task of shopping! On display is the entire paraphernalia of school and collegeware, all of which can be procured at the same venue. It also includes a fun and entertainment agenda for kids. That, in fact, is the USP of this entire venture. Along with 70 business stalls are others that offer a host of games designed to keep the children entertained. Right from a treasure hunt and hoopla stalls to magic shows, a merry-go-round, a Ferris wheel, there’s even a huge wall, which kids can use as a canvas and let their creativity flow! From the moment you enter, there’s fun in store, with a whole lot of small prizes to be won. The idea conceived by Display Creators, this is a unique exhibition in the city, catering tothe school child. At the same time, this element of frolic adds a whole new dimension!

Hey good lookin’
If we are not having fashion shows in the city we are having fashion workshops! Cottoning on to the fact that there is no biz like showbiz these days, especially in terms of the career choices amongst the present generation, Sandeep Soparkar, a Graviera Mr India finalist has decided to launch his personality development and makeover workshop in the city. With classes to be held every weekend from June 7, at the Poona Womens’ Council Hall Soparkar is offering his students expert training in the fine art of catwalk, fitness and camera angles- all essentials for making it big in the glamour world- at the one month long workshop. For this he also has celebrities like Farida Master, Zarine Boyce, Ewa Maria Cherukuru and Asha Sherlekar coming to give the students lectures on their areas of specialisation.“I will be making portfolios for each student alongwith introducing them to local modelling agencies with whom they can probably liase in future,” reveals Soparkar, who has already screened and selected sixstudents and is on the look out for a few more before he sets the ball rolling. So if you have the ambition and the talent and the Rs 6,000 for the fee, Soparkar apparently has the launching pad. Check it out.

Sanctions nuked
How would you react to economic sanctions by the US government against India? Huh! Well, check out how V.C.Bagmar, a Puneite, reacted to it. He had applied for a loan of five lakh rupees, from Bank of America, for a purchase of an Opel Astra car. No sooner did he hear about the US decision of economic sanctions against India, he says “I have cancelled the loan given by the Bank of America, for purchase of my car due to the economic sanctions proposed by the US government. I believe that such a reaction from the general public would certainly make the US government have a second thought to their decision.” In a letter addressed to a division of the Bank of America, Bagmar has quoted other reasons too. Amongst them being “poor service and failure of commitments.” Well, is it now time then to `Be Indian, buy Indian?” Well, Bagmar surely thinks so.Just pool in
The extended Phatak family obviously believes in the dictum “The family that swims together stays together.” Come May and the 52 members who make up this family across four generations get together to swim. “This is a tradition that my uncle D B Phatak started almost 20 years ago. All of us enjoy swimming so it is natural for us to meet around a swimming pool. We also go trekking and then for dinner in the evening,” says Ashwini Divekar. This year the family got together for an hour of swimming at the Choice health resort on Karve Road after a morning spent trekking to Sinhagad. The youngest member at the get together was 2 years old while the oldest was 75 years old. The family obviously has an adventurous streak. “Till last year my mother who is 72 years old was a ladies coach at the SP College swimming tank where she used to instruct older women. ”she says, a family that believes in pooling in.
