
MARD protests assault on Sassoon doctor
Nearly 250-300 resident doctors belonging to the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors MARD went on a token strike on Friday to protest against the assault on Dr Avinash Parmar by the relative of 17-year old Kunal Jadhav who died of cerebral pathology in Ward number 9 of Sassoon General Hospital on June 11. The strike was called off in the evening.
A statement issued by Dr Vasudeo Pai, Joint Secretary, MARD, claimed that the relatives of the patient held Parmar responsible for the unfortunate death and physically assaulted him. The association has demanded the immediate suspension of the concerned Resident Medical Officers RMOs who allegedly took no action to ensure Parmar8217;s safety and also called for a detailed inquiry into the matter.
However Jadhav8217;s condition worsened on Thursday morning and he died at 11.30 a.m. According to Pai and Parmar, the patient8217;s mother and other relatives assaulted Parmar holding him responsible for Jadhav8217;s death. Parmar claimed that despite repeated calls for help, no action was taken by the authorities to ensure his safety. A general body meeting of the association was held later which decided to observe a token strike on Friday.
However, necessary precautions were taken to ensure that emergency services were not affected. Organisations like Kamgar Kalyan Sanghatana, Sassoon General Hospitals and Maharashtra State Government Employees8217; Nurses Association and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Medicos8217; Association supported the strike.
