Rs 20 lakh worth jewellery stolen in separate thefts
In what could be one of the biggest thefts in the city, over Rs 20 lakh worth of goods were stolen today in two separate incidents. A jewellery shop was burgled in the early hours of Sunday in Rasta Peth. According to the complaint lodged by Nagraj Chandmal Chajjed, jewellery worth Rs 9,68,200 were stolen.

According to ACP crime II V P Munde, the lock of the shop was broken by the burglars and a small opening made in the exhaust facility of the shop. 8220;The wire mesh was broken and the fan twisted and ripped out thus providing an entry for the thieves,8221;said ACP Munde.

According to ACP Munde, the thieves were seen by an old lady living in the vicinity when she had come to use a nearby public toilet. The lady saw the burglars and ran away in panic. 8220;This probably scared the burglars because the back door of the shop was found forced. They probably broke the lock and escaped,8221; said Munde.

In the panic, the burglars left behind a Rs 10,000 bundle of cash and a few jewellery pieces. According to the old lady8217;s account more than three people were involved in the heist.

In the second incident, bonds and jewellery worth Rs 10,45,000 were found missing from a locker at the HDFC bank8217;s Boat Club Road branch on Sunday. According to the FIR lodged by Gurulin Kaur and Balwinder Singh Sehgal, residents of Kondhwa Budruk, their valuables were found missing on Sunday when they went to open their locker. They had last seen the contents of their locker on February 11 and a wedding prompted them to withdraw the jewellery from the bank on Sunday.

On discovering the jewellery missing they lodged a complaint with the Bund garden police. According to the police, since the theft was discovered only after the couple opened the locker, they are suspecting an inside job.
