CHANDIGARH, Jan 21: More than five weightlifters including three in the women’s category may face ban for one year in the next academic session, if they are found guilty by the executive committee of the Punjab University Sports Committee (PUSC) which will be held shortly.

Out of the 23-member team, Punjab University men and women weightlifting and powerlifting teams, six lifters — Jaspal, Gurpreet and Pradeep in the men’s group while Rajni, Anita Sharma and Anupam Thakur in the women’s section, are facing charges of indiscipline during the All India Inter-University weightlifting and powerlifting meets held recently at Raipur varsity (Madhya Pradesh).

DS Bains, Sports Authority of India (SAI), coach, who accompanied the teams, said that some of the members were irresponsible, which resulted in poor showing in the All India meet. The coach has also given a written complaint to Kewal Singh, Director incharge, PU Sports Department.

“Some of the lifters including women did not follow my instructions. They remained out till midnight, which marred their chances of winning positions,” disclosed the coach. The players, however, allege that they were given raw a deal by the team coach. “The coach never took pains to inform us about our events. So we were not able to reach the venue on time,” said a women lifter of Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26.

While another said: “We never got our daily allowance.” The coach, however, clarified: “I had informed the Director Incharge on telephone about the incident, who directed me to stop their allowance”.

The Director Incharge, however, said that we would not tolerate indiscipline at any cost. “The players are representing the university and should bear responsibility. Action would be taken against the players, who are found guilty”.
