
CHANDIGARH, May 13: A rally by the employees of Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation was held at the Chandigarh Housing Board roundabout today.
The employees marched from the city bus stand towards the Chandigarh Housing Board roundabout carrying banners in favour of the PRTC and raised slogans against the Punjab government. The PRTC employees later staged a demonstration at the Chandigarh Housing Board roundabout to press for their demands. The protesters demanded the introduction of a regular system of recruitment for drivers and conductors who are presently being hired on contract basis, release of bonus for the year 1995-96, arrears of DA and the release of notification pertaining to leave encashment and ACP scheme under the regulations of the pay commission, among others.
The employees, who had gathered from various places in Punjab, included representatives of the Indian National Trade Union Congress INTUC, Centre of Indian Trade Unions CITU, Scheduled Caste and Backward Class Union and Karamchari Dal in the rally.
Gurbaksh Singh, president of the Karamchari Dal, Bachhan Singh, Suchha Singh and Gurcharan Singh, presidents of INTUC, CITU and SCBC, respectively, addressed the rally and said that the employees would intensify their agitation in case their demands are not met with at the earliest.
