A racket of trafficking in tribal labour from Gumla district in Jharkhand has surfaced with activists of Nayasarai village here giving shelter to the Kujjurs, a family that was sold.

The Kujjurs claim they were taken out of Jharkhand with a promise of jobs in Assam but were sold as labourers in Bhutan. Ravi, the head of the Kujjurs family said they were among 22 families, all from Cahinpur block in Gumla district. They had come in contact with one Ajay Baraik, a resident of Cahinpur. ‘‘In 1996, Baraik, insted of taking us to Assam took us to Phuntsholing (Bhutan) where we were sold to a Nepalese Ring Rig Serpa for Rs 1.75 lakh. Serpa took us to work for Grip company where we broke rocks for roads in Bhutan.
