
CHANDIGARH, Dec 3: The Prayaas Rehabilitation Centre for physically challenged children celebrated World Disabled Day here today to highlight the responsibility of society towards the handicapped children. About 200 children from various schools and other institutions for disabled participated in various cultural programmes organised at the centre at Sector 38.
The Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children organised cultural programmes to mark the World Disabled Day. Director and Principal of the Government Medical College Prof V.K. Kak was the chief guest on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Kak underlined the need for joint efforts by teachers and parents to to train the mentally challenged children. He also informed that the Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children was planning to start a mental retardation clinic where mentally retarded children from all over the region would get medical treatment and counselling.
The institute for the Blind, Sector 26, also marked the World Disabled Day by visiting various schools in the city and enlightening them about the possible prospects for the handicapped children.
Panchkula: The day had a lot to offer for the quot;differently abledquot; who were present at the Saket Institute on occasion of the World Disabled Day. There were games, races and all that was to give them a reason to smile. The chief guest on the occasion was S.D.Sharma, chief manager of the regional office, Punjab National Bank.
Games like carrom and table tennis and musical race, crutch race, wheel chair, tricycle race and ball the basket were held for different age groups of children and adults. As many as 40 children and 15 adults participated in the contests. Prizes were sponsored by Punjab National Bank and sweets and woollen socks were distributed by Bharat Vikas Parishad. The guest of honour, C.B.Goyal, donated a sum of Rs 2,100 to the institute and promised to donate one computer for the training of the physically handicapped.
Ten handicapped persons were given various aids and appliances under the ADIP scheme of Central Government. Vinod stood first in table tennis, while Ajay stood first in musical chair race. In crutch race for 12-16 age group, Manisha won the first prize and in the same competition for 8-12 age group, Rakesh stood first. In painting competition, Sonia was first, while in the same competition for 8-10 age group, Suman stood first.
In the same competition for 12-16 age group, Sonia was first while from adult category in Carrom, Hanuman was first. In musical chair, Virender stood first, while in tricycle race Sukhvinder bagged the first prize and in ball the basket, Surjeet was first.
