PUNE, Feb 21: Fancied Priyadarshani Sports Club outplayed rivals Kids XI to lift the Dr S WV Fredricks trophy, with a convincing 6-3 win, in the final encounter of the hockey tournament for juniors, played at the PCMC poligras stadium here today.

The winners controlled proceedings for most of play and barring the three goals conceded by them, they were always a shade better than their opponents. However, Kids XI, a bunch of young lads who had earlier stunned Goodwill SC in the semi-final, stood up well against the experienced Priyadarshani side.

No sooner had play begun, that the goal spree was set in motion, the first goal coming in the second minute of play. Vinod Kellapan slammed in the first goal for Priyadarshani, entering the shooting circle from the right flank. The tempo of the game then picked up, and Kids XI went looking for an equaliser while Priyarshani sought to increase their lead. Eight minutes later the second goal came Priyadarshani’s way. Salim Shaikh sounded the boards once again, converting the second penalty corner awarded to them.

A two goal lead gave Priyadarshani a further boost and they were all over the opponents, restricting play in the rival half. In the 18th minute forward line player Jayesh Rajput scored the third goal in quick time. Making a swift advance, once he got within shooting range, he sent in a cracking shot beating the keeper, Vishal Gajarmal, all ends up. Mahendra Sawant pulled one back for Kids XI in the 21st minute, taking advantage of a defensive lapse.

The onslaught by Priyadarshani SC continued in the second session too. Abbas Tinwalla credited the fourth goal getting hold on to the ball which rebounded off the keeper. The goal hungry leaders kept up their aggressive style of play. In the 55th minute Jayesh Rajput entering the shooting circle was wrongly obstructed by rival keeper Vishal. The resultant penalty stroke arising thereof was converted by Vinod Kellapan. Salim Shaikh struck the final nail on the rival’s coffin, scoring in the 57th minute off a penalty corner.

For Kids XI, Yogen Nande hammered in one in the 44th minute while Sachin Sawant further consolidated the score line putting one past the keeper in the 56th minute. Kids XI received seven penalty corners in all, failing to convert any, while Priyadarshani converted two of the five penalty corners in their favour.
