Venice launches crackdown on love locks over making historic bridges look ugly

The city launches a crackdown on love locks which starry-eyed visitors have attached to historic bridges on the Grand Canal.

Venice is considered as one of the world’s most romantic cities, but some measures are now being taken to keep young lovers actions under control.

The city has launched a crackdown on hundreds of love locks which starry-eyed visitors have attached to historic bridges on the Grand Canal.

In a trend that is believed to have begun in Rome five years ago, lovers inscribe their initials on a padlock, attach it to a bridge railing and throw away the keys as a symbol of eternal passion.

But authorities in Venice have said that the craze has made an eyesore of the city’s bridges, including the famous Ponte del Rialto, the Scalzi Bridge near the train station and the timber Ponte dell’ Accademia.

Already a lot of padlocks have been removed from the Ponte dell’ Accademia but we’re going to do the same for the Rialto Bridge, where the situation is more serious, the Telegraph quoted Stefania Battaggia, from Venice’s council,as telling the newspaper Nuova Venezia.
