Uttarakhand: Arm fractured,10-yr-old treks 10 km to hospital

He could not run home as the connecting bridge was washed away.

Arun Singh,10,was playing with his friends in Tilwara village,about 10 kilometres from Rudraprayag on the Kedarnath road,when disaster struck on June 16. He could not run home as the connecting bridge was washed away. So he decided to trek down the hill,to the other side of the highway.

On the way,he slipped and fell,suffering a fracture in his arm. Despite the pain,the boy continued to walk,till he reached Rudraprayag,where his grandfather lives.

“We were playing on the other side of the river. My friends ran down the hill,I was left behind. We saw our houses crumbling. I slipped and fell on a rock. My arm bore the impact. There was no road. I cried for some time,but then decided to walk so that I could reach the other side. I then

started walking towards Rudraprayag,where I could contact my grandfather,” recalled Arun.

But his ordeal did not end there. About a fortnight later,Arun,his arm in plaster and accompanied by his grandfather,trekked back to meet his parents in Tilwara on Saturday.

“Since the highway has got washed away,we have to take the hill route to reach our village,” said Swaroop Singh,Arun’s grandfather.
