Former Australia captain Steve Waugh disagreed with Gary Kirsten on fatigue as a reason behind India’s early ouster from the Twenty20 World Cup and said some “basic errors” by Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men was the cause of the debacle.
“I do not think that it (fatigue) is a very valid reason. I think everyone play same amount of cricket these days. At the end of the day, they (Indian team) did not play well enough on a couple of days. They were not sharp enough and they made some basic errors. So they will be disappointed,” Waugh told reporters in New Delhi.
India coach Gary Kirsten had attributed fatigue as one of the main reasons for the team’s early exit from the prestigious tournament.
“In that (Twenty20) form of game, there are lots of upsets. There is no one who is a particular favourite. It is disappointing for whole of India. I know there are 1.2 billion people who will be disappointed but there are 20 million Australians who are pretty disappointed as well,” he said.
Waugh was talking to reporters after meeting Union Home Minister P Chidambaram at his North Block office on Tuesday. On being asked about Dhoni’s captaincy,he said,”He (Dhoni) is an excellent captain. He has done excellent job. Obviously, people are very emotional right now about what happened.”
