China arrests 16 in fixing probe
Chinese police have announced the arrest of up to 16 former players,along with club and league officials,as part of a widening probe into rampant match-fixing in the countrys professional football league. In one instance in August 2006,Yang Xu,general manager of second-tier team Guangzhou Pharmaceutical,was accused of handing 200,000 yuan ($30,000) to his counterpart at rival club Shanxi Wellsend,Wang Po,to ensure a win for Guangzhou.
German police quiz players
Police in Germany questioned two players from the Fortuna Duesseldorf club on Thursday in connection with the widening match-fixing scandal in Europe. The two play for the reserve side of the club,which competes in the fourth-tier league. The main Fortuna team are in the second-division. The club gave no details about Thursdays interrogation,except to say it was connected to the match-fixing scandal.
Juventus doctors banned
The Italian Olympic Committees anti-doping commission has recommended that two Juventus doctors be banned for three-month bans for doping violations. Bartolomeo Goitre and Luca Stefanini stand accused of breaking Italys anti-doping code,a note on CONIs web site said on Thursday. In October the pair were held responsible for Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro failing a dope test.
IOC,Namdharis share title
Indian Oil and Namdhari XI were named joint winners of the 46th senior Nehru Hockey tournament after the final remained undecided despite going into the tie-breaker and sudden death. Both captains decided to avoid a decisive climax after there was no result despite extending the sudden death to 10-10,making it a massive 30 shots in the tie-break.
Jeev,Jyoti tied for 15th
Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa shared six birdies against a lone bogey to return a five-under 67 and take a share of the 15th spot after the opening round of the Omega Mission Hills World Cup of Golf in Shenzen,China. The Irish team of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy shot 14-under 58 in the opening round to take a three-stroke lead.
Rashid on top of leaderboard
Rashid Khan took the lead at the LG Western India Amateur at the Poona Club Golf Course despite a one-over 72. Rashid has a one-shot lead over overnight leader Rahul Bajaj,who stumbled to a 77 in the third round. Vikram Rana returned a card of even-par 71 to move into third place while Aditya Bhandarkar (74) is one shot further back alongside Gagan Verma.
