Amritsar: Mohammad Kaif (148 n.o.) and Parvinder Singh (113) scored centuries to power Central Zone to 367 for five against East Zone on the second day of their Duleep Trophy quarter-final match. They shared crucial 184-run stand for the sixth wicket to put Central in a commanding position,after Suresh Raina (98) was cleaned up by Ranadeb Bose,having added just 15 runs to his overnight score.

Tax on IPL matches

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will levy entertainment tax on

Twenty20 matches conducted by the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the state. The quantum of tax for matches held in Mumbai will be 25 per cent of the revenue generated from the event. “It is not an issue at all. If there is an entertainment tax,we will pay it,” said Modi.

IPL sum stuns Parnell

Johannesburg: The $610,000 that Delhi Daredevils shelled out to secure the service of Wayne Parnell has left the South African pacer stunned. “I never expected this — it’s a huge sum of money!” was the reaction of the 20-year-old pacer. Bushrangers qualify

New Delhi: Victoria Bushrangers have qualified to play in this year’s Champions League Twenty20 after winning Big Bash Preliminary final against Gold Queensland Bulls. The Australian domestic side had also featured in the inaugural T20 tournament in 2009. South Australia’s West End Redbacks had recently became the first team to qualify for the 2010 event.

Ministry,FIH at loggerheads

The appointment of G S Mander as the returning officer for Hockey India elections put the sports ministry and the game’s world governing body at loggerheads. While the ministry is insisting on having a retired judge to oversee the February 7 elections,the International Hockey Federation (FIH) said it found Mander to be an “excellent candidate”. The ministry,meanwhile, has suggested the names of retired High Court judge C K Mahajan and former home secretary Madhukar Gupta for the job in a letter to HI president Vidya Stokes,saying that the current set-up was a self-nominated ad hoc body which “cannot exercise unlimited powers which can impair the legitimacy of the newly elected body”.

Tevez helps City beat United

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez scored twice against former club Manchester United to clinch a 2-1 victory in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final. Tevez drove home a penalty just before halftime to cancel out Ryan Giggs’s close-range tap-in for the holders. Tevez celebrated by cupping his ears,the same gesture he directed at United manager Alex Ferguson toward the end of last season after scoring against City. The two teams now play the second leg at Old Trafford next Wednesday.

Anand draws again

Viswanathan Anand settled for his fourth draw,signing truce with American Hikaru Nakamura in a fourth-round Group A match at the Corus Chess in Wijk Aan Zee. Meanwhile,GM P Harikrishna caused a big flutter in the group ‘B’ defeating top seed Arkaditsch Naiditsch of Germany with ease. Playing with white pieces,the Indian took 42 moves to beat his opponent.

Pallikal loses,Suchde through

Dipika Pallikal was ousted but India’s Siddharth Suchde was through to the second round at the the PSA Indian Challenger Series in Chennai. South African Siyoli Waters beat fourth seed Pallikal 10-12 8-11 11-9 11-9 11-8 in 40 minutes. Fifth seeded Suchde scored a straight games win over Leo Au of Hong Kong,11-4 11-3 11-8 in 51 minutes.

Mumbai FC beat Lajong 3-1

Shillong Lajong’s poor run continued as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to hosts Mumbai Football Club in the I-League. The hosts went ahead with the help of an own goal in the 22nd minute,before the visitors equalised through Niwan-O Gatphoh in the 50th minute. Skipper Abhishek Yadav (74th) and Subhas Chakravarthy (85th),however,got the winning goals.

Nigeria enter quarter-finals

Peter Odemwingie scored twice to lead Nigeria to a 3-0 win over Mozambique and a place in the quarter-finals at the African Cup of Nations. Nigeria finished second in Group C with six points,three behind defending champions Egypt,who beat Benin 2-0 in the other game.
