Resurgent Federer beats Fish to advance into semis at World Finals

Roger Federer completed his round-robin matches at the ATP World Tour Finals with a 6-1 3-6 6-3 defeat of American Mardy Fish at the O2 Arena

Roger Federer completed his round-robin matches at the ATP World Tour Finals with a 6-1 3-6 6-3 defeat of American Mardy Fish at the O2 Arena on Thursday.

The Swiss claimed a third consecutive win as he warmed up for a potential semi-final against either world number one Novak Djokovic,Tomas Berdych or David Ferrer. Tournament debutant Fish bowed out with a spirited performance despite having no chance of reaching the semi-finals,having lost both his previous matches to Rafa Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Federer never came anywhere near the heights he achieved in his sensational demolition of Nadal on Tuesday and he was outplayed by Fish in the second set as the 29-year-old American let rip with some flashing winners. However, the 16-times Grand Slam champion resumed normal service, breaking Fish at the start of the third set before moving on to complete victory in one hour 47 minutes.

Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi crashed out after suffering their third consecutive defeat in the event, going down to the Polish duo of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in their Group B match. The fifth seed pair was outplayed 2-6 1-6 by their eighth-seeded opponents.

Bopanna and Qureshi looked rusty throughout, committing four double faults compared to just one by Fyrstenberg and Matkowski. The Poles also converted five of the eight break points they got to comfortably win the match.

Fyrstenberg and Matkowski dropped just five points on serve in the 25-minute first set and continued to dominate in the second set as well, sailing to a 4-0 lead without dropping a point, regularly hitting powerful and angled returns.

Ferrer stuns exhausted Djokovic

On Wednesday night, his body aching after a season of almost unceasing success,Novak Djokovic ran into a brick wall in David Ferrer. The fifth-seeded Spaniard’s relentless hitting proved too much for Djokovic on Wednesday as Ferrer won 6-3 6-1 to qualify for the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals. “I think today maybe was my best match of the season,’’ Ferrer said.

From 3-2 in the first set,the off-form Serb lost seven straight games. He made 33 unforced errors, exactly thrice as many as Ferrer. Djokovic can still advance to the last four if he beats Janko Tipsarevic on Friday, but he isn’t hopeful.

Tipsarevic, who stepped in for the injured Andy Murray, has no chance of reaching the last four after he was beaten in three sets by Tomas Berdych in Wednesday’s earlier match. Berdych saved a match point en route to a 2-6 6-3 7-6 (6) win to maintain his hopes of progressing from Group A.
