Two wickets for Mitchell Johnson and one each for Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus had West Indies on the ropes after the second day of the first Test at The Gabba. Having declared their first innings closed at 480/8,Australia had reduced the visitors to 134 for five when stumps were drawn. Chris Gayle and Adrian Bharat put on 49 for the opening wicket, but the West Indian skippers dismissal for 31 sparked a collapse that saw them reduced to 63 for four, with the other big guns,Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo both in the hut. Chanderpaul fell to Siddle for a six-ball two, while Bravo was caught by Watson off Johnson for a second-ball duck. Travis Dowlin was unbeaten on 40 with wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin on 22. Earlier in the day,Australia continued to pile on the runs, having started the second day on 332 for five. Marcus North, unbeaten on 42,carried on from where he had left and shared a 58-run partnership with off-spinner Nathan Hauritz before being dismissed for 79. Hauritz continued to rub it in along with fast bowler Siddle, and reached his half-century off 90 deliveries before Ponting decided to call an end to the innings. Brief scores: Australia 480/8 decl (Katich 92,North 79; Bravo 3/118) vs West Indies 134/5 (Dowlin 40*; Johnson 2/45)
