Former crown prince of Nepal Paras Shah was arrested on Tuesday after Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala complained he had tried to kill her son-in-law during a drunken brawl at a jungle resort three days ago. Paras has been charged with 'attempt to murder'. The only son of former king Gyanendra was taken into custody by the Kaski district police in Pokhara, around 180 kilometres west of Kathmandu. He was picked up from a hotel where he was staying with his friends. Shah has admitted to having fired his pistol on Saturday night at the Tiger Top resort in Chitwan. He said he shot in the air and did not aim at anyone, nor did he wish toi destroy property. He fired in the air 'in a fit of anger' after being provoked by 'contemptuous comments' against him,the monarchy and Nepal by a Bangladeshi and an Indian national. The Bangladeshi national in question was Ruben Chowdhary, the son-in-law of the Deputy Prime Minister. Chowdhary has lived in Nepal for the last four years. According to the police,Paras is being interrogated by two senior police officers in Pokhara. He has insisted for a legal adviser, they said. After interrogation,Paras will be taken to the spot where the shooting took place in Chitwan. Ruben Chowdhary had complained Paras pointed a revolver "at his head' and then shot in the air. Congress Party President Sushil Koirala,an uncle of Sujata Koirala, also issued a statement demanding Paras be arrested. Official sources have said Paras does not have a licence for the revolver used. He will most likely be tried under the Arms Act. Highly placed police sources said the Chitwan resort's managers, witnesses and even Chowdhary would be interrogated in the case.
