Manchester United extend perfect start

Nani scored one goal and set up another as Manchester United beat Chelsea 3-1 on Sunday to maintain their perfect start to the season.

Chris Smalling had headed in the opener for United before Nani scored a spectacular second, taking on three defenders before launching a fierce strike from outside the area into the top of the net. Wayne Rooney added the third before Fernando Torres pulled one back just after halftime. Rooney then missed a penalty before Torres wasted a chance to put Chelsea back in the game by shooting wide of an open net.

It was United’s fifth straight victory to start the season, equalling a club record of 18 straight home league victories, set in 1904-05 and giving them sole lead atop the standings after Manchester City drew 2-2 at Fulham.

City squandered a two-goal lead after Sergio Aguero put them in charge at Craven Cottage but Fulham hit back through Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy. In another match,Liverpool suffered a 4-0 hammering at Tottenham Hotspur after having two players sent off, their heaviest league defeat since 2003. Emmanuel Adebayor scored twice and Luka Modric and Jermain Defoe got one apiece for the Spurs. Sunderland won 4-0 against Stoke City.
