Loyalty, lack of options makes a few stay back

The handful of Indian players who have stuck to the ICL might be in a negligible minority but they have their reasons to stay back.

Hyderabad’s Devishetty Vinay Kumar lost his job with National Andhra Bank six months ago and he says ICL provides him the only hope. “I don’t think at this age I will get a chance in the Ranji squad. Now I have adopted a wait and watch attitude,” says the 32-year-old.

For Gujarat wicketkeeper Pallav Vora,it is a question of loyalty. “I got my big break with ICL and I will stick with them,” Pallav says. “They (BCCI) are saying that players will be allowed to play domestic cricket but what happens if they drop ICL players after one match,” Vora asks.

He went on explain that a phone call to Australian players Jason Gillespie and Damien Martyn helped him to take this decision. “I spoke to the two and they said that they were not leaving ICL. It was reassuring,” says the Western Railway player.

Rajasthan’s Anshu Jain says he is indebted to the ICL. “Many of my team mates told me to leave. But ICL gave me the big break and because of this only I have a stable life,” Jain points out.
