J-K to have ice hockey rink and skiing avenue for enthusiasts

In an attempt to boost the winter sports in Jammu and Kashmir and to attract more tourists,the government is coming up with an ice hockey rink and a skiing avenue in the Ladakh region of the state,sports ministry officials said here today.

Apart from the two sporting facilities,the government will also build adequate horse polo infrastructure in the region to promote the sports tourism.

These facilities will be coming up in the Kargil district of J&K at a cost of Rs 14.43 crores,the officials added.

While a sum of Rs 9.54 crores will be spent on the hockey rink,an amount of Rs 2.39 crores will used to build the snow skiing avenue.

Another sum of Rs 2.50 crores will be put in use to develop the horse polo infrastructure in Drass,Kargil.

The move comes as per the recommendation of the special task force on developmental needs of Ladakh region by the ministry of home affairs.

The task force in its report has said that the region has a great potential to develop its youth through winter sports like Ice-hockey and snow skiing.

The initiative can provide the unemployed youth with a livelihood as these facilities can attract more tourists to the region,the report said.
