India go to Youth Games minus chef-de-mission

Indian contingent is without its team leaders for the Youth Asian Games, which began on Friday in Nanjing,China.

The tiff over who is authorised to nominate the chef-de-mission and deputy chef-de-mission has ensured that the Indian contingent is without its team leaders for the Youth Asian Games, which began on Friday in Nanjing,China.

Already forced to compete as independent athletes under the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA),the latest setback has only added to the Indians’ woes.

With the IOA suspended, the Sports Authority of India (SAI),under instruction from the Sports Ministry, had forwarded the names of Sushmita Jyotishi (director,NIS) and RK Saxena (director,SAI headquarters) to lead the contingent. But the OCA refused, saying it was the IOA’s prerogative to nominate the chef-de-mission. Sports Ministry sources said they asked for the names to be put forward since the IOA was suspended. IOA acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra, meanwhile, said that the confusion would end soon. “The government has no business to do this in the first place. The OCA has clearly told them that they would deal with the IOA only,” he said. “Now it is too late to send new names,so a couple of names from the contingent will be put up.”
