With just three IPL matches this season,it was natural for Deccan Chargers Harmeet Singh to be wary when bowling to Chennai Super Kings opener Matthew Hayden. But a little help from skipper Adam Gilchrist meant the lanky pacer was gifted his wicket, and Deccan a crucial win.
Hayden is an aggressive batsman and likes to dominate. Gilchrist told me to bowl stump to stump and, since he was keeping up to me,Hayden couldnt play his slog shots. His wicket set the tone for us, said the 23-year-old,considered his teams lucky charm.
The Punjab-based bowler is clearly in awe of his captain. Gilchrist is very aggressive and attacking in his approach. We all look up to him. He encourages everyone, irrespective of the players experience. When one is down he comes up with a pep talk to boost the spirits, Harmeet said.
What sets him apart is his ability to bowl slow, with variations. The tracks are slow in India. And in T20,one has to add a lot of variations. Darren Lehman has told me to use slower deliveries, yorkers and bouncers. I have also developed a new slower delivery this time around,a kind of flipper, said Harmeet, who gave away just 21 runs for one wicket against Chennai.
