At 107 for 6 in the 16th over, with Bangalore needing a gettable 37 runs off 26 balls for the Indian Premier League-II title,it was a question of who would blink first. Mark Boucher with years and years of experience of such situations still at the crease, the balance tilted slightly towards Bangalore.
Then Harmeet Singh came and turned it around. The 6 3 Mohali bowler, inducted into the Deccan Chargers on Adam Gilchrists recommendation, bowled a short ball outside off stump. The ball bounced slightly more than Boucher expected and he cut it straight to backward point. As Gilchrist said, that moment gave the Deccan Chargers a sniff of victory.
I didnt even think I could dream of such things, Harmeet told The Indian Express from Johannesburg. First, playing in the IPL,then being in the same dug-out as greats such as Gilchrist,Herschelle Gibbs and Andrew Symonds. Getting the crucial wickets of Rahul Dravid and Boucher in the final was unbelievable. For me,this means the world.
Harmeet credited the win to Gilchrists leadership: We defied the odds and the credit goes to Gilchrist. After I got Boucher out,Gilly came to me and said,Well done mate, now we can smell victory. That meant a lot to me. Gilly kept the atmosphere very positive and infused confidence in everyone.
He will not forget the post-match celebrations in a hurry. None of our players knew what was happening or what was being said. We were overjoyed,we didnt care what happened around us. This IPL was like a fairytale for me. Once home, the first thing the 21-year old wants to do is go and visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Harmeet, who has trained under former Punjab pacer Sukhwinder Singh Tinkoo for the last seven years, then wants to work his way into the Punjab Ranji Trophy team: I am confident. The rest is upto the selectors, Harmeet said.
As far as immediate goals go,the medium-pacer is looking forward to the Champions League,to be played in the next three months. I am sure we can win that as well.
