For new bowling coach Dawes,IPL will be a learning curve

By the end of IPL V,Joe Dawes,India’s newly appointed bowling coach would have spend more time in a Kings XI Punjab jersey than a BCCI-logo embossed gear. The 41-year-old Queenslander briefly spent time with the Indian team during the Asia Cup in Mirpur. He will now have to devote his time to not only coaching the Kings XI bowlers but also keeping an eye on his other wards, who will be playing for different IPL teams.

Dawes will also use the IPL in order to assess up-and-coming talent and he believes that the T20 version of the game will provide an ideal test of temperament for budding cricketers. For Dawes, too,it will be a learning experience.

“Over the next 45 days I will get to know the conditions here and the pitches better. It is good that Praveen Kumar is part of the Punjab outfit and that means I will get ample time with him. Praveen is a smart and skillful bowler. Consistency and strengthening can do wonders for him,” Dawes said on Monday.

The challenge for Dawes will be in building a fit group of bowlers who can work as a unit rather than the Indian team relying on just one or two strike bowlers. “My role will be to manage the bowlers in such a manner that they do not fall to injuries. I would work to balance the fitness level of the Indian bowling. It is unfortunate that bowlers these days do not get off-seasons to recover,” Dawes said.

On his first assignment with the team, the Asia Cup,Dawes said: “The Indian bowlers did not perform the way they would have wanted in Bangladesh. I have chalked out some plans with the Indian captain ahead of the T-20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.”
