Fonseka’s wife says he could die if not treated properly

The wife of Sri Lanka's former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka has accused authorities of preventing her husband from receiving medical treatment and said he could die in custody if not treated properly.

The wife of Sri Lanka’s former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka has accused authorities of preventing her husband from receiving medical treatment and said he could die in custody if not treated properly.

Fonseka’s health has deteriorated since he was held at the naval headquarters in Colombo after his arrest in February and was in need of urgent medical attention,Anoma said in a statement here.

“I suspect that the government is insisting that he is not suffering from any ailment to deny him specialist treatment and thereby ensure his natural death in custody,” she said in a statement on Monday.

Anoma said her husband needed specialised treatment after he suffered injuries in an assassination attempt in April 2006.

Meanwhile,the army said medical officers attending on Fonseka,said his health condition has not deteriorated as alleged by Anoma Fonseka and other spokespersons.

“Army on its part has provided the medical services to him on a regular basis and round the clock since he continues to remain under Army care,” it said in a statement.

“No such complaint of sickness has been made by General Fonseka to this date,nor has any observation to that effect been made by the Navy Medical Officer in attendance,” the statement said.
