False start for Mumbai Indians

Tendulkar's 69 off 42 balls went in vain as the Mumbai Indians lost the opening match of the Champions League.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 69 off 42 balls went in vain as the Mumbai Indians lost the opening match of the Champions League by nine runs to the Highveld Lions at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

In chase of 187,Mumbai Indians got off to a strong start with Tendulkar and Shikar Dhawan adding 83 for the first wicket in 9.5 overs.

However the dismissals of Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu in successive overs pegged back the Mumbai Indians. Tendulkar played beautifully and along with JP Duminy added 42 runs to give the side a fighting chance. However, wickets of Tendulkar,Kieron Pollard and Duminy put the Lions back in the game.

Brief scores: Highveld Lions 186 for 5 in 20 overs (Jonathan Vandiar 71,Neil McKenzie 56 not out; Lasith Malinga 3/33); Mumbai Indians 177 for 6 in 20 overs (Sachin Tendulkar 69,Shikhar Dhawan 32;S Burger 2/33)
