An African Union spokesman says an explosion in Somalia’s capital has killed at least 20 people.

Maj Barigye Bahoku says the blast today took place in Mogadishu’s main Bakara market near a mosque.

Islamic insurgents control much of Mogadishu and have been trying to topple the fragile government for three years.

Somalia has not had an effective government for nearly 20 years.
