Dabholkar hits Punjab for a six

overnight batsman Wasim Jaffer added just 19 runs to his total but it was enough to get him his 49th first-class century.

Immediately after tea,Harbhajan Singh padded up and started warming up. With the last recognised pair of Uday Kaul and Amitoze Singh at the crease, the Punjab No.8 knew that he might have to take guard very soon. Harbhajan’s wait lasted just 15 deliveries as Kaul, while trying to defend, edged left-arm spinner Vishal Dabholkar’s turning ball to the slips where an alert Iqbal Abdulla took the catch.

At this stage,Punjab were precariously placed at 123/6. All hopes now rested on the Punjab skipper,a handy down-the-order batsman. Harbhajan curbed his attacking instinct and started to nudge the ball around. However,a Dabholkar gem spun sharply and Harbhajan, like Kaul, was caught in the slip.

Punjab were staring down the barrel at 131/7,still 151 runs short of Mumbai’s first innings total of 282. Dabholkar, playing in his sixth first-class match, finished with figures of 6/38. Punjab were skittled for 155 with last man Manpreet Gony giving Dabholkar his final wicket.

DAY OF SPINNERS

On a day when 15 wickets fell,12 to spinners,it was the wicket of Siddharth Kaul, that was perhaps the most important of Dabholkar’s fledgling career. It was the one that gave him his first five-wicket haul.

The 26-year-old had already proved his worth at the seamer-friendly pitch at Lahli in the opening match of season. Against Haryana,he went home with a five-wicket haul. But since that was Sachin Tendulkar’s final domestic game,Dabholkar didn’t get the attention he deserved. For Punjab,Yuvraj Singh, who was engaged in a duel with Zaheer Khan, top scored with 33 runs.

The Punjab team’s decision to play on a turning track instead of the PCA stadium, where the track assists fast bowlers, turned out to be a blessing for Dabholkar who helped Mumbai took an unassailable lead of 127 runs.

Earlier, overnight batsman Wasim Jaffer added just 19 runs to his total but it was enough to get him his 49th first-class century. Zaheer Khan then scored a 50-ball 33,but Harbhajan (4/90) ensured that Mumbai’s innings ended at 282. Mumbai,in their second innings, were 35 without loss and took a lead of 162 runs.
