Chinese artists enliven Diwali festival in Beijing

A noted Indian restaurant chain in Beijing treated the guests numbering over 400 with a variety of Indian cuisine.

The sprawling Indian Embassy here came alive with colourful display of Indian classical and Bollywood dances by Chinese artists followed by barrage of fire works at a function organised to celebrate Diwali.

Several hundred members of the Indian community mostly IT professionals,businessmen and students took part in the function,prompting the Indian Ambassador to China,S Jaishankar,to observe that the rapid expansion of the strength of the community demonstrated the increasing engagement of India-China relations.

The main focus of the function last night like many of the Indian events in Beijing was the dance performances by well trained Chinese dancers specialising in Indian music and dance,whose numbers too are increasing every year.

While a three member troop,trained at the Indian Cultural Centre here performed classical Kathak dances,another group performed riveting Bollywood numbers.

This year’s festivities had a south Indian touch as Vidya Vidyanathan,an accomplished Carnatic musician,gave a recital.

The Indian Embassy obtained special permission to celebrate the occasion with a volley of fireworks to bring the spirit of Diwali to Beijing.
