Three days after losing an acrimonious Premier League match to United 3-2,Chelsea were on the verge of elimination by the same scoreline before Eden Hazard’s penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Ryan Giggs put United ahead in the 22nd minute,but David Luiz tied the score with a penalty in the 31st after Aexander Buttner tripped Victor Moses in the United area. Javier Hernandez put the visitors back ahead in the 43rd,but Gary Cahill made it 2-2 in the 52nd,only for Nani to give United the lead seven minutes later.

Hazard levelled the score once again after Scott Wootton pushed Ramires over in the penalty area,and goals from Daniel Sturridge and Ramires gave Chelsea a 5-3 lead. Giggs then converted a penalty in the 120th minute when Cesar Azpilicueta fouled Hernandez. Chelsea will travel to Leeds for their quarterfinal.

Norwich beat Tottenham 2-1 with goalkeeper Mark Bunn saving a penalty from Clint Dempsey in the 89th minute after Marc Tierney fouled Kyle Walker. Defending champs Liverpool were ousted with a 3-1 defeat against Swansea,the former club of Reds manager Brendan Rodgers. Swansea’s first win at Anfield since 1964 came courtesy goals from Chico Flores,Nathan Dyer and Jonathan de Guzman. Luis Suarez was Liverpool’s lone goalscorer.

Easy for Real

MADRID: A Karim Benzema brace and goals from Kaka and Jose Rodriguez propelled Real Madrid to a 4-1 win at third-tier Alcoyano in the first leg of the Copa del Rey fourth round. Benzema headed Real into the lead in the 21st minute,Kaka doubled their lead in the 35th and the 17-year-old Rodriguez,on his first team debut,made it 3-0 in the 67th. After Javier Lara scored for Alcoyano with a free kick in the 77th,Benzema scored his second in the 87th.

In other matches,Malaga won 4-3 at Cacereno,Atletico Madrid defeated Real Jaen 3-0,Almeria won 2-0 against Celta Vigo,Zaragoza beat Granada 1-0 and Las Palmas beat Rayo Vallecano 1-0.
