Britain wants to bring back Zimbabwe into the Commonwealth-fold in two years time to encourage the unity government in Harare to carry out a wide range of political and human rights reforms.

According to sources,British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will impress upon the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Trinidad this weekend to hold out prospect of readmission to encourage the unity government in Harare to carry out a wide range of political and human rights reforms.

According to The Times,Britain believes there has been some economic progress since the power-sharing deal between President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and wants that to be recognised by the summit.

It will make clear that more progress has to be made on human rights. But the decision by Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change to boycott Cabinet meetings and withdraw from any dealings with Zanu PF,led by Mugabe,is a setback.

Tsvangirai has “disengaged” from co-operation after he said that he was dealing with a “dishonest and unreliable partner”,the paper said.

His decision was prompted by the arrest of Roy Bennett,the deputy agriculture minister designate,it said.

The white farmer is facing trial on terrorist charges,which his party says are fabricated.

Mugabe withdrew his country from the Commonwealth in 2003 and has fiercely criticised Britain ever since.
