Briefly cricket: Dahiya sacked as Delhi coach,deputy promoted

Former glovesman Rajiv Vinayak will be the assistant coach.

The DDCA decided to sack Vijay Dahiya from the post of chief coach of Delhi senior side and promoted his understudy and former India seamer Sanjeev Sharma to take over. Former glovesman Rajiv Vinayak will be the assistant coach.

Asked about the reason for removing Dahiya,a DDCA sports committee member told PTI,”He (Dahiya) wasn’t available for the whole season. He is associated with Kolkata Knight Riders and during the second phase when we prapare for Vijay Hazare Trophy,he will be busy with KKR camps. Now we don’t want somebody who can’t devote full attention towards Delhi cricket.” Sharma,who had played two Test matches and 23 ODIs for the country,will face his first assignment during the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy,in which Delhi are participating as winners of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Strauss may apply for post of director of ECB

london: Andrew Strauss is learnt to be thinking about applying for the post of ECB’s managing director. The vacancy came up a few weeks back when Hugh Morris resigned to rejoin Glamorgan. “One of the things you’ve got to be very careful with is to understand the actual job properly,” said Strauss,36 to the BBC. “I’ve seen Hugh Morris do parts of his job,but not the whole job. I’m looking into it but they’re decisions that need to be made in the next two weeks,” he told the English media house. Strauss had retired from all forms of cricket a year back,having captained England in 50 of his 100 Tests and scored 7,037 Test runs at an average of 40.91. Last year,he was appointed to the International Cricket Council’s cricket committee,which meets twice a year to consult on playing matters and offer recommendations on technical issues and rules.

In footsteps of other Ashes hero,Simon Jones to retire

london: Ashes hero and English fast bowler Simon Jones will retire from first-class cricket following Glamorgan’s YB40 final against Nottinghamshire at Lord’s. Matthew Hoggard,Jones’s strike bowling partner during the 2005 Ashes,also called it a day from all forms of cricket earlier this week. Jones,34,will also quit List A cricket. Jones hails from a sporting family,with his father Jeff Jones having won 15 Test caps for England between January 1964 and March 1968. Jones played a big role when England regained the Ashes in 2005,and went on to play 18 Tests and eight one-day internationals for England. Jones suffers from a chronic knee-injury which requires daily attention.
