Sir Alex Ferguson has stated Manchester United will be supportive of Liverpool in what is sure to be an emotional Sunday afternoon at Anfield. He’s hoping United supporters will follow suit.
The scene is expected to be highly charged,as Liverpool (4 points) take the Anfield pitch for the first time since the Hillsborough Independent Panel released its findings after reviewing 450,000 pages of evidence surrounding the disaster of over 23 years ago. “As a club we’re totally in support of Liverpool and the situation they’re in,” Ferguson told Manchester United’s official website. “It’s going to be a very emotional day and we’ll support them in every way we can.”
The concern is whether United supporters will do the same for their bitter rivals since both groups of fans have exchanged derogatory chants. Liverpool supporters have invoked the 1958 Munich air disaster in songs geared toward disparaging Manchester United (nine points). The issue was pushed to the forefront after United supporters were heard making malicious chants during the Red Devils’ 4-0 win over Wigan last weekend.
On the pitch,Liverpool are trying to end a season-opening four-game win drought after Luis Suarez’s goal in the 71st minute salvaged a 1-1 draw at Sunderland last weekend. Suarez should be back in the first team after being rested for Thursday’s UEFA league engagement. He has three goals in four matches and netted Liverpool’s lone tally in a 2-1 defeat at Manchester last season.
Unlike Liverpool,United are off to a strong start and looking to build on Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Galatasaray in Champions League. The club may get a boost if Wayne Rooney is available for selection after missing two games with a gash on his leg during a game against Fulham. United havent won at Anfield in four seasons.
Saturdays results: Swansea 0-3 Everton,Southampton 4 -1 Aston Villa,West Bromwich 1-0 Reading,West Ham 1-1 Sunderland,Wigan 1 -2 Fulham.
