Kapil,a gurukul ashram disciple from Meerut,had been beating many of the star archers in the Indian men’s recurve team regularly during practice. But on Friday,he came up short against Tarundeep Rai in the final.

After taking the first set,and with 2 points in the pocket,he was in control,but found the going tough from there,losing the next three sets straight to concede the top spot to Rai. After losing the first,Rai cut down on his errors and adjusted well in windy conditions to pile on the pressure on the Meerut archer.

In the semi-finals,Kapil got the better of Rahul Banerjee to book his place in the finals. Later,Banerjee beat Chu Sian Cheng of Malaysia to take the bronze and complete a sweep.

Earlier,the Indian womens team grabbed all the medals in the individual category. Deepika Kumari barely managed to hang on to the top spot against an experienced Chekrovolu Swuro in the finals. The gold was only decided in the fifth and final set with Deepika scoring 26 a point more than Swuro to triumph in the final. Before this,both won two sets each to take it to the last arrow of the match. Pranitha Vardhineni took the bronze as she beat team mate Sushma in another close contest.

The shortcomings of the Indian compound team were exposed once again as they failed to get a gold medal in the individual category.

Chungda Sherpa faltered in the final against Malaysias Muhammad Zaki Mahazan to settle for silver. Chinna Raju Srither took bronze in the men’s category. The hosts got another silver as Gagandeep Kaur came up short against Jerseys Lucie O’ Sullivan,while Scotlands Nicola Simpson settled for third place. In all,India finished their campaign with a total of 13 medals four gold,five silver and four bronze.
