A raucous cheer has accompanied the Mumbai Indians every single time they have walked on to a cricket ground over the last two weeks — both at CCI and even the DY Patil Stadium (where they ironically played an away game against Deccan Chargers).

Tendulkar & Co have made most of their home-heavy schedule by racking up 14 points and all but booking a place in the semi-finals of IPL III. Mumbai play the first of their five remaining away games against Chennai on Tuesday. Despite that, with momentum on their side, they will start favourites.

Inconsistent Chennai

Chennai,on the other hand, have blown hot and cold this season after being the most consistent team in the first two editions of the IPL along with Delhi Daredevils. But the home faithful have turned up in numbers and painted the MA Chidambaram Stadium yellow for all their team’s home games so far.

While Vijay, who has moved up to the opening slot for the last couple of games, has hogged the limelight at the top of the order,Suresh Raina,Mathew Hayden, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Albie Morkel have scored a half-century each too.

The main worry for the former finalists has been in their bowling though. Muttiah muralitharan has been at his mesmeric best with 12 wickets at 20.75 but Chennai have been forced to indulge in some serious shuffling with their new-ball bowlers. While Morkel has been the only one in the lot to have played all nine games, the likes of Laxmipathy Balaji,Manpreet Singh Gony and Sudeep Tyagi have been as inconsistent as the team itself.

It wasn’t until Doug Bollinger made an impressive IPL debut against Rajasthan — with figures of 2 for 15 and a memorable catch in the outfield — that they managed to threaten with the new ball.

With their hopes bolstered following a high-scoring win against the Royals, the home fans will now want their team to halt Mumbai’s rampaging run.
