Aaron searching for dazzle in debut

After being told evening that he’d be making his Test debut at the Wankhede Stadium,India’s new pace sensation Varun Aaron

After being told on Monday evening that he’d be making his Test debut at the Wankhede Stadium,India’s new pace sensation Varun Aaron would have certainly endured a sleepless night ahead of his first big break. It was just a month ago, when Aaron had gone through the same feeling after being told that he would be playing his first ODI match against England at Wankhede. The news had certainly come as a big relief for Aaron especially after finishing the England tour as a benchwarmer.

Since the day he’d bowled one delivery crossing the 153 kmph-mark in a domestic game, the hype had built around him until Aaron made his international debut.

With the series already won,the team management gave a chance to Aaron in place of Umesh Yadav. Though the decision might look harsh especially with Yadav doing well in the last two games, testing Aaron was necessary keeping the Australia tour in mind.

“Wankhede has been lucky for me. It has been my debut ground,so to speak. My ODI debut (against England) was decent,so I hope my Test debut is also a memorable one. I made my U-19 debut here too,” says Aaron. The Jharkhand pacer bowled decently on Day One of his Test cricket career and maintained his speed successfully, but Aaron got the first taste of the longest version where batters didn’t give him any wickets. His first six overs saw him trying to get his length right even though on a few occasions he surprised with his late away moment to West Indian opener Adrian Barath. Like Yadav during his first Test match in New Delhi few weeks ago,Aaron too bowled short of length.

“You have to work hard for a wicket in Test cricket, especially on such a track. There was a a bit of dampness in the wicket and as a result, there were a few close shaves early in their innings. But that was the case only for the first 45 minutes,” he explains. After getting three wickets at Wankhede in the ODI against England,Aaron had certainly hoped that his debut ground had more in store for him. The 22-year-old pacer has realised that wickets in Tests won’t come easy. “I have learnt that each day has to be played with the same intensity — that’s the biggest lesson I learnt on my first day as a Test cricketer.”

Even though Aaron couldn’t boast of an excellent Day One in office,he will certainly look to make it count over the next four days.
