President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam today set forward five national missions to achieve the goal of a ‘‘competitive, developed India’’. The address, part of ‘The Overwhelming Question’ ended with a meet example — when India International Centre director P.C. Sen faltered over the vote of thanks, the President was finished his sentence for him.

Kalam called for concerted missions in water, energy, education and skills, infrastructure and employment generation to aim at 10 per cent GDP growth per annum ‘‘which has to be sustained for a minimum period of 10 years’’, he said. A roadmap has been laid and the priority for the Government was to convert the roadmap into missions, he added.

Drawing from the philosophies of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi, Kalam said whenever India decided to achieve certain goals with clear targets, it was successful. He cited the examples of Green Revolution, space programme and development in IT. ‘‘These successful missions give us the confidence that as a country we have the resources and the capability to achieve difficult missions, if only we decide to achieve them,’’ he said.

When Sen faltered on his vote of thanks, saying: ‘‘I thank you, His Excellency Abdul…Abdul…’’, the President rose to his rescue, saying ‘‘Kalam’’. During the question-answer session, Congress leader Vasant Sathe asked what was the solution for low contribution to national exchequer by people. Inviting him to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President said: ‘‘Satheji, you’re a political leader and you should bring solutions to problems and not problems only.’’
