NEW DELHI, June 20: The Election Commissioner, G V G Krishnamurty, has not found support from the other two Commission members on the “whip” issue in the presidential poll.

For over three months now, Krishnamurty has been campaigning against political parties issuing a whip to party members saying this would amount to an “undue influence”.

However, a full commission meeting today decided not to issue any directive to the political parties even though it is now clear that a contest for the presidential post is likely with both Vice-President K R Narayanan and former chief election commissioner T N Seshan in the fray for the July 14 polls.

Krishnamurty has preferred not to press the point and the commission unanimously concluded that such a directive was best avoided. Krishnamurty had earlier said that though he held strong views on the issue of the whip, he would abide by whatever consensus evolved in the Commission.

The new-found maturity in the Commission’s handling of a contentious issue is a welcome change from earlier days when differences within the Commission were aired publicly.
