Pre-poll: BJP flouts MCD rules, frames law

Section 72 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act clearly states that the first House meeting every month has to be a General House meeting.

Section 72 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act clearly states that the first House meeting every month has to be a General House meeting. No pending agendas of the previous month can be taken up in the first meeting of the month. The decisions taken and the agendas passed in this meeting shall be treated null and void.

But with Assembly elections round the corner, it seems the BJP is not concerned following rules. In haste to allow commercial activities in the garage of DDA flats, the BJP, which holds a majority in the House, passed the resolution without hearing out the Opposition.

8220;The DMC Act does not allow a pending matter to be passed in the first House meeting of the month. Now when the elections are round the corner the Mayor is randomly passing one item after the other,8221; said the MCD leader of the Opposition Jai Kishan Sharma.

The Congress has decided on sending a legal notice to the Mayor and will also write to the Lieutenant Governor. The BJP, however, denies having violating any law.

But the Municipal Secretary Office confirms that there has been a violation of the act. 8220;The agendas passed in the house today can be declared null and void,8221; informed the Secretary Office.
