NEW DELHI, DEC 10: With no sign of settlement, the nationwide postal strike continued for the sixth consecutive day today even as employees’ unions expressed willingness for another round of talks with the Centre.

The unions, claiming that the strike had brought postal services to a standstill, threatened to prolong it further if the Centre failed to give an immediate assurance on their demands related to wage revision and other benefits suggested by the Justice Talwar Committee.

“The strike is on. We are waiting for an invitation from the Government for another round of talks,” the unions said here.

Meanwhile, official sources said the Government was thinking of an “alternate mechanism” to clear mails that had piled up in the last five days.

Most of the mails in the rural areas were being clearedthrough special vehicles and it would be taken up in cities as well, they added.

The Postal Joint Council of Action, comprising National Federation of Postal Employees, Federation of National Postal Organisations, Bharatiya Postal Employees Federation, however, said they would intensify the strike action if centre deployed Army and Home Guards to clear mails.

Dismissing reports that three out of the five main demands had been already settled in their last meeting with Communications Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, the unions said “This is totally wrong and baseless.”
