The dean of forensic science in the prestigious Guwahati Medical College Hospital was arrested yesterday for allegedly taking bribe for issuing a post-mortem report of a police officer who had died five months ago. Police say Dr Bhushan Chandra Rai-Medhi had asked for Rs 20,000 from Kuntil Bhuyan, an administrative officer with the IIT, Guwahati, for issuing the post-mortem report of his wife Manorama .
Manorama, who was a senior Assam Police Service officer, had died due to alleged negligence by doctors at a private hospital in October last. Though the police had registered a case against the nursing home and seized several documents, they had made no progress in the case, primarily because the GMC authorities had been delaying the post-mortem report. Five months later, when Dr Rai-Medhi told Bhuyan that he would release the report for Rs 20,000, Bhuyan immediately got in touch with the police.
