As reported by this paper today, Shaun Pollock has paid the price for his team’s early exit from World Cup 2003. A press release issued today by the United Cricket Board said he had been relieved of the captaincy, a day after a five-hour meeting between Pollock and the selectors at which the decision was taken.

A new captain will be named tomorrow; the names being considered include Gary Kirsten, Mark Boucher, bowler Dale Benkenstein and even young batsman Graeme Smith.

Yesterday’s crucial meeting at Newlands in Cape Town, about 200 yards from the field where South Africa lost their opening game in the World Cup five weeks ago, was called to discuss team selection policy regarding the Sharjah Series starting on April 1, and the Bangladesh tour after that tournament.

But other issues included Pollock’s future role. ‘‘He went into the meeting with the intention of resigning as there was a perception that he did not have the full support of the side after the team’s poor performance in the World Cup’’, said a source present at the meeting.

Pollock, it is believed, has been unhappy with a number of factors surrounding the World Cup and certain policy which was outside the confines of the selection room. One factor was that pressure and political interference in team selection created an imbalanced bowling attack, described by former selector Pat Symcox as the worst since 1960.
