
MUMBAI, APRIL 6: National Cricket Club won the Police Invitation Shield cricket tournament, sponsored by Jayantilal Khandwala & Sons and Khandwala Securities. They won the title by virtue of their first innings lead over MCA Colts, just 17 minutes after lunch on the second day of the three-day final at the Parsee Gymkhana, today.
National pocketed Rs 50,000 and MCA Colts got Rs 21,000. The prize distribution function will be held on Wednesday, April 7 at the Parsee Gymkhana at 4.00 p.m.
National resumed at 35 for one in reply to MCA Colts’ total of 234. Their second-wicket pair of Sameer Apte and Sunil More added 122 runs in 26.5 overs and laid the foundation for a win. Apte made 83 off 119 balls with the help of four sixes and nine fours, while More’s knock of 57 was studded with a six and nine hits to the ropes in 100 balls.
The fifth-wicket pair of Rajesh Sutar and Amit Dani applied the finishing touches by putting on 67 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket, before both the captains decided to call offthe match.
Sutar’s innings of 35 had one six and three fours and came in 52 balls, while Dani hit two sixes and five boundaries in his 36-ball innings of 39.
Off-spinner Manoj Joglekar was the most successful bowler with two for 36, while leg-spinner Vineet Sarang and left-arm spinner Nishit Shetty took one wicket each.

Star-studded Tatas were forced to a tie-breaker before prevailing over Fr Agnel (Vashi) 6-4 in the St Peter’s YouthCentre hockey tournament at the St Stanislaus ground, Bandra, today.
Cheops D, Olympian Gavin Ferreira, Robin S, Raju Bagade, Manoj Lokhande and Claes Fernandes were the goal-getters for Tatas. Stanley D, Neil P, Cyril B and Ilyas K accounted for Fr Agnel.
The Greater Mumbai Police and Tata Electric encounter was also decided via the tie-breaker. The cops triumphed 4-3.
Sanjay (2), Mahendra and Wajid scored for GMP and Manju, Raju and CT Fernandes for Electric.
In yet another game of the same competition, Rajput XI pipped Maharashtra State Police B 1-0. The all-important goal was scored by Carl Lopez.
CCI shine
The Cricket Club of India won their matches in all three team events of the Motilal Sanghi Inter-club squash tournament at CCI today.
While the CCI women’s team beat The Leela 2-1, the juniors defeated Jindal 4-1 and the Masters thrashed Navi Mumbai Sports Club 7-0.

Nalin Patel stormed into the quarter-finals of the AR Dias Open Billiards Tournament registering a convincing 39-0 victory over A D’Cruz.
Playing with a handicap of 90, Patel dominated the proceedings from the start against his opponent who had a handicap of 14.
