CHANDIGARH, July 26: Former Assistant Superintendent of Model Jail, Burail, Sitla Prashad Mishra’s police remand was extended till July 28 by UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) A.K. Bishnoi in the jailbreak conspiracy case today.
Constable Jaswinder Singh’s police remand was also extended by the magistrate till tomorrow in the same case. At the very onset, the assistant district attorney stated that the accused were required for custodial interrogation as two mobile phones and adapters, earlier smuggled into the jail premises, were yet to be recovered.
Apprehending arrest by the Sohana police, the accused while coming to courts this morning had claimed that they could get the incriminating articles recovered, the ADA stated. Seeking a seven-day remand for Mishra, the ADA claimed that the accused had confessed hiding the mobile in a wooden box at his residence in Uttar Pradesh.
The accused had recently exhausted seven days’ leave and the fact could be verified from authorities in Central Jail at Jalandhar, he added.
Regarding the investigating agency’s failure to take the accused to Amritsar, where the prosecution had earlier claimed the cell phone to be hidden, the ADA said that Mishra had confessed making a false statement just before their departure yesterday afternoon.
Jaswinder, meanwhile, was required as the cell phone and adapter were to be recovered from his aunt’s residence in a village in Fatehgarh Sahib district.
The accused had confessed burying the same in the fields, investigating officer D.S. Chandel added. Opposing the plea, the defence counsel argued that the accused had already been interrogated by the police for three days. The prosecution was coming up with fresh excuses to get the remand extended, the counsel stated.
The prosecution had earlier stated that the duo were involved in the conspiracy to smuggle PETN explosive into the jail complex.
The explosive, according to the prosecution, was to be used for blowing up a portion of the jail for enabling "hardcore militant" Jagtar Singh Hawara and other alleged assassins of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh to escape.
