Police investigations indicate the hand of an organisation named Arya Sena in the recent bomb blasts and attacks on mosques and madrassas in western Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal.

Earlier, they had been working on the theory that terrorist organisations of Jammu and Kashmir may be involved and had even detained several persons, including imams of some mosques, for questioning.

But Senior Superintendent of Police, Saharanpur, V.K. Aggarwal, says one of the accused had revealed in his ‘‘confession’’ that he was part of the Arya Sena, which was working against ‘‘Islamic terrorism’’.

On June 4, two motorcycle-borne assailants shot at Hafiz Shamim, an imam of a mosque near village Sarkadi in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The villagers chased them and were able to catch one of them. He was identified as Narinder Giri of village Landhora of Hardwar district of Uttaranchal.

Four bombs, a pistol, cartridges and pamphlets of Arya Sena were found with him.
