In the wake of Wednesday’s terror attacks in Mumbai, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti has issued an order under Section 144 of the IPC, asking landlords to submit a tenant profile form to their local police stations within a month. “The tenant profile forms will be available at all the police stations. The same can also be downloaded from the Kolkata police website, kolkatapolice.org,” said Chakrabarti“Landlords who fail to comply with the order will be served with a notice and will subsequently invite action under Section 188 of the IPC, which could lead to six months’ imprisonment,” he added. The police have stepped up the security arrangements at vital installations — which are already under surveillance since a high alert was sounded in the city on November 15, following warnings from the Centre of possible attacks. “We have reviewed the situation and identified several new possible targets. Security has been tightened. We do not want to disclose what and where these new targets could be as that could compromise security measures.”“Security at hotels, malls and cinema halls is not up to the mark. Some are at least using undercarriage mirrors and metal detectors, but our directives for several other security measures have been ignored,” the commissioner said. “We will be holding another meeting with hoteliers, mall management and corporate officials very soon,” he added. Following the Mumbai attack, a fresh alert has been sounded across the state. Checking at entry points in Kolkata have been intensified and additional forces posted in vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure. “Extra personnel have been deployed at railway stations, five-star hotels, government offices and vital installations. There will be police picketing at all major road junctions and crowded places. Every vehicle and person will be thoroughly checked before entering hotels, malls and the airport,” said Chakrabarti. The commissioner alongwith other Kolkata police top brass held an emergency meeting with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Home Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti to review the security arrangements. The railway police have also been asked to be vigilant. Senior police officers said vehicles have been banned from parking in front of railway stations and the airport.
