Madurai, March 20: Seven members of a gang of poachers, allegedly involved in the murder of three elephants in forest ranges in Tamil Nadu, have been arrested and 30 kg of ivory seized from them, a senior forest official said today.

Manoj Kumar Sircar, DFO, Tirunelveli, told PTI over telephone that the culprits were arrested in Kerala with the help of its forest officials and had been brought to Tamil Nadu for remand and prosecution.

Two tuskers were found dead in Vasudevanallur forest range and one in Mundanthurai forest range in Tirunelveli in the last one week.

He said the gang members were professional poachers and smugglers of ivory. They had shot the elephants dead using the same rifle and removed the ivory. Six members were still absconding and efforts on to nab them.

He said patrolling in the forest ranges was being intensified and better communication equipment, arms and additional personnel sought to prevent such incidents.
