MUMBAI, MARCH 28: Union Law and Justice Minister Ram Jethmalani today denied that there were any differences between President K R Narayanan and Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee over reviewing the Constitution.

“There are absolutely no differences between the President and the Prime Minister about reviewing the Constitution,” Jethmalani told a meet-the-press organised by the Press Guild of India here. Recently the Minister was re-elected as member of the upper house from Maharashtra.

“Review does not mean changing the whole Constitution,” he said, “it is now about 50 years since the Constitution is in place and there was just need for introspection.” Charging the Opposition he said critically, “you can amend but not review….every time there have been amendments there have been reviews.”

The Minister also said that there was no hidden agenda behind reviewing the Constitution — and there was no question of switching over to the presidential form of government. “The terms of reference given to the commission reviewing the Constitution does not say so,” he pointed out.
