Government servants in Manipur who attend public meetings to debate a ‘‘plebiscite’’ in the state many be in for trouble. The issue has become a hot topic ever since it was raised by a separatist militant group last year.

Governor S S Sidhu is believed to have sent a communique to DGP A K Parashar and Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh to discuss the matter. He is likely to discuss with them whether or not disciplinary action can be taken against such government servants, sources said.

But the DGP denied having received any such communique. The CS is in New Delhi on vacation.

It may be recalled that Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee had refused to discuss any plebiscite call last year, saying that it was ‘‘out of the question’’.

The United National Liberation Front (UNLF) had issued a statement in last February, demanding that Manipuris be allowed to choose their future through a plebiscite held under UN supervision. The demand came after the Governor’s Republic Day speech last year, in which he had called militant groups to settle their claims through dialogue.

Ever since the UNLF demand, public meetings have been held, mostly in Meitei-dominated valley districts, to debate the plebicite, and many government servants had attended them.
