SURAT, June 2: The full import of the hike in petrol prices sank in on early on Tuesday, as vehicle owners queued up at various petrol pumps in the city. By Tuesday afternoon, confusion reigned supreme following the finance ministry’s announcement revising the hike in petrol prices.
Petrol pumps continued to charge Rs 30.76 from vehicle owners, even after the announcement restricting the hike to Re 1 on one litre of petrol, on the grounds that there was no directive from the oil companies whose dealers they were.
While the hike announced in the Union budget presented on Monday evening became effective from midnight last night, the revision was not put into effect by oil companies as they had not received any order from the Petroleum department.
Thus vehicle-owners continued to pay the raised price of Rs 30.76some petrol pumps were accused of charging more than the hike announced in the budget.
District Supply Officer K D Chandnani denied the allegations that some pumps started charging Rs 30.76 immediately after the finance minister’s speech in Parliament. He had also received information on those lines, he said, adding that the complaints, however, were not specific.
Vehicle-owners who have taken bills from petrol pumps will be able to seek refunds from the respective petrol pumps, Chandnani said.
